Community

The people of Dharavi have formed a close knit community, possibly because they live in such close confines with each other. The crime rate, which is typically high in such areas across the globe, is also considerably less here either due to the increased income of the populace or due to the sense of community.

The residents are people who have migrated here from across the country to avail of the greater opportunities afforded by urban living. Many of them send much of their income back to their families in the village and have built quite substantial residences in their village of origin. Dharavi residents are proud to say that they have a Chhota Maharasthtra, Chhota Delhi, Chhota Tamil Nadu and Chhota Rajasthan all cheek by jowl within the suburb.
