Pottery In Dharavi

One of the traditional industries in Dharavi is the pottery industry. Started almost 100 years ago by the potters that migrated to Mumbai from Gujarat, the industry still churns out many of Mumbai’s earthenware needs from beautiful and graceful pots and urns to tiny earthen lamps (known as diyas) that light up the cityscape come Diwali.

The potters stick to their traditional methods that have been handed down over the generations but are canny enough to modernize where it saves time and labour whilst increasing the output. Their humble creations, with their distinctive reddish hue are sold throughout Mumbai and grace many of the large hotels and residences.
