Finishing

For some leathers an additional finished process is used during which a surface coating is applied to the leather. At this time processes like oiling, brushing, padding, impregnation, buffing, spraying, roller coating, curtain coating, polishing, plating, embossing, ironing, combing (hair-on) and glazing are used.

The number and types of processed used are determined by the ultimate purpose for which the leather is to be used. Some hides do not go through the surface coating process at all.

The process of preparing leather for use is an extensive and long drawn out one. Additionally the chemicals that are used can be hazardous if not properly monitored. The process is also labour intensive. This is perhaps one reason why genuine leather articles come with a steep price tag.
